Daisy and Lisbeth, two young fairies, were playing when suddenly a quivering mess of colours caught their attention. They crept close.

“Its a ball with the air escaping” Lisbeth stated.

“No, its not cos it keeps lying still. It must be a animal in trouble. Who will we get to help it?” Daisy whispered as she reached out her hand. Slowly, she touched the scrunched up colourful mess. It quivered like jelly and she whispered, “don’t be afraid we will sort you out.”

“Breeze would want to help.” Lisbeth said.

“But he has no magic. We need someone with magic.” Daisy looked sad. “I have a little magic but not enough besides we don’t know what it is or what to do.”

“We need someone older and kind.” Lisbeth said with certainty. “Elegant will help  but…I don’t want to meet Lovisma. She twisted my pony tail into a tight knot once and mum had to cut my hair. No, I don’t want to see Lovisma.”

Daisy sighed. “I will speak to Elegant. If I meet Lovisma I will hide from her.”

“I like your plan.” Lisbeth whispered. “I will be look out and hoot like an owl if I see her.”

They ran to Elegant’s house and hid in the tall grass. In the distance they saw Lovisma sitting on a fallen tree. She was flicking twigs into the river. As they left her hand she moved her wrist. The twigs shot forward hitting the ducks with a loud whack. Ducks and birds were flapping and screeching. Lovisma was chuckling.

The two young fairies moved towards the back door of the house. When they knocked they hid behind a rose bush just in case Lovisma heard.

Elegant came to the door. She looked out and said, “Hmm strange wind about today, it did sound like someone knocking on my door.”

Lisbeth giggled. “It’s us,” she said.

Daisy flew up to Elegant and explained their problem.

Elegant said, “I saw this problem once before,  I need to collect a few items. We need to hurry.”

They arrived at the wood to find that the moving bunch of colours was tiny.

Elegant said, “Oh dear. Hold this please Lisbeth, I have to hurry.”

Lisbeth held the small cauldron. Elegant poured a few drops of a golden liquid into the pot. Next she added a dash of silver dust from her wand.

“I need you both to stand back. Please be quiet so we don’t frighten it.”

They did as she asked and Elegant chanted a quick spell.

It happened fast. The colours rose from the ground one by one high into the sky. Then the colours moved close together and began to bend.

“It’s a rainbow.” Daisy and Lisbeth shouted.

Elegant laughed at their surprised expressions. When they calmed down she explained what she thought had happened. “Sometimes, Leprechauns get tired of minding rainbows. If they sleep or walk away the rainbows become starved of love and attention. Sometimes, they shrink so much they vanish.”

“That is sad,” Lisbeth said. Daisy looked as though she would cry.

She pulled two giant rainbow coloured lollypops from her pocket and handed them to Daisy and Lisbeth, saying. “Today is a great day. Your kindness saved a rainbow. Come on lets tell everyone.”
