I write warm, clever tales that help children fall in love with reading, with humour and a sprinkle of magic guiding every page.
Who I Am
I’m Maria Matthews—author of children’s chapter books and modern romances, an enthusiastic granny, a chocolate lover, and a lifelong dabbler in too many interests to list. I can’t sit still, I like to dance (badly), and while I’ve tried every sport and excel at none, I do love keeping active.
What I Do
I’m editing the first book in my children’s series, Lottie and Harry. My adult short stories appeared in Woman’s Way magazine, The Holly Bough, and The Waterford Review, which encouraged me to pursue writing more seriously. After years in office administration, I switched to coaching athletics in primary schools—an experience that nudged me toward writing for children. My first published book was The Runaway Schoolhouse.
What Drives Me
I aim to spark kids’ imaginations so they dream up adventures of their own. My books keep kids sharp and adults a bit suspect, with humour and a sprinkle of magic throughout.
How I Live & Work
Recently retired, I split my time between my five grandchildren and my favourite pursuits: reading, writing, working with dogs, keeping fit, and baking. I adore dark chocolate, enjoy wine even if it doesn’t love me back, and I dread editing—but I never skip it.
Just For Fun
I can’t sing, I don’t like saying no, and I once dreamed of working for Walt Disney.

Both Sara and Maria love to hear from our junior readers. It is always nice to know what we got right and how we can improve.
